It is oft-noted that in the British Isles, the game of "football" is what Americans call "soccer." The rest of Europe follows suit: in the Germanic countries the sport is "Fußball," in French-speaking lands it is "le football," in Spain they say "fútbol," and in Portugal. it is "futebol." (Italians call it "calcio," which was the name of a 16th century game similar to modern soccer/football.)
